Cranford, NJ – November 16, 2009 - On Saturday, November 14, 2009, Paragon eDiscovery Risk and Compliance Practice Lead Bryan Melchionda participated as a judge in the Northeast Regional Ethics Bowl. Sponsored by the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE), the regional competition at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY hosted undergraduate teams from twelve schools in the New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and New Hampshire areas.

"As colleges and universities rethink their curriculum to address concerns about educating for civic and professional responsibility, there has never been more urgent a time for practical and ethical conversation and debate in civic and professional life," said Melchionda. "It was exciting to be a part of an event that helps identify the emerging issues in practical ethics to promote public dialogue on those issues and facilitate high quality interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching," he said.

During the full-day event, the participating teams received 15 cases to analyze with an eye to their ethical dimensions and quandaries. Each team was required to develop extensive arguments to justify one line of action or another to resolve the moral tensions that each case posed. Several rounds of competition took place where one team was asked for their recommendations on a given case and an opposing team was given the opportunity to challenge their response. In the second portion of each match, the teams' roles were reversed. Finally, the judges evaluated each team's presentation, critiques, and responses. In the end, the Union College team was victorious over the Dartmouth College team by a mere point.

"Seeing each team member's enthusiasm and dedication, particularly considering the momentous time involved in preparation and the closeness of the competition, was truly rewarding," said Melchionda of the experience.

The Northeast Regional Ethics Bowl was one of several regional annual competitions at colleges and universities across the United States and throughout the world. Undergraduate students that qualify at the regional bowls are invited to enter the national competition, The Sixteenth Intercollegiate Ethics Bowlsm Competition on March 4, 2010 in Cincinnati, OH, that will occur in conjunction with the 2010 APPE Annual Meeting.
